Working together today for a Net Zero tomorrow

Our blueprint for the future

Why we are here

Engineering Net Zero is not just about working to minimise our impact on the planet and the climate

Its about leaving our world in a better state than we found it. Not to maintain the status quo. To Improve it.

To avoid catastrophic climate change we need to act now to achieve Net Zero Carbon. We must all work together, across engineering, manufacturing and industry, across businesses and across borders. Ours is an urgent remit. We must limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. Our future depends on it.

SNC-Lavalin is at the forefront of this mission, leading engineering and industry in achieving Net Zero Carbon as rapidly as possible, by helping our clients manage climate risk and build climate resilience. Our global experts offer holistic, cutting-edge solutions and expertise at the forefront of sustainable best practice, including Biodiversity Net Gain, protecting and investing in Natural Capital and providing nature-based solutions across markets and sectors to help them optimise their path to Net Zero Carbon. In partnership with the planet.

RICHARD ROBINSON, CEO, UK & Europe, Atkins

2020 produced the highest reliable temperature recorded; wildfires raged across large expanses of land; Arctic ice reached record lows; and we saw the most active hurricane season over the Atlantic. We must revolutionise how we use our land, how we travel, generate and use energy, and even what we eat, to protect our environment now and for future generations.

The UK has set a Net Zero target for 2050 – and it’s now just 29 years away. I believe collaboration with our clients, and incorporating climate targets into our operations and projects, will have the most impact. As a company, we have to responsibility to play our part – so we’ve set a regional target for the UK and Europe of being carbon neutral in 2021 and Net Zero by 2030. To meet these, we’ll be focusing on innovation, business change and encouraging sustainable behaviours across our offices, staff and operations.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

Leading by example

At SNC-Lavalin it’s important to us to lead by example, and that’s why we have set a regional target of reaching carbon neutral in 2021, and Net Zero Carbon by 2030, 20 years ahead of the target set the UK government in the context of the Paris Agreement.

Our main focus will be on innovation, business change and encouraging sustainable behaviours across all our offices, staff and operations.

We will build on existing work to develop the processes, tools and training needed to make carbon reduction ‘business as usual’ in both the methods and services we deliver. We’ve been reporting our carbon emissions for many years through the Carbon Disclosure Project, and are looking ahead and locking in some of the good practice that the events of 2020 brought to the fore, to drive sustainable reductions in emissions for the long term. For us, this starts with our commitment to carbon neutrality in 2021. To meet both targets, we must draw on our collective strength: both the innovations and experience of our leading experts, and the ideas of our staff in the earlier stages of their careers. We’ll also be sharing our successes and our insights as we work towards Engineering Net Zero, through continued reporting and thought leadership.
